UPM Confers Emeritus Professorship on Malaysian Scientist Advancing Virus-Based Cancer Therapy

By: Ameesya Aghniya Ab Rahim

SERDANG, 29 November – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has conferred the title of Professor Emeritus on distinguished national scientist, Academician Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah Mohamad Yusoff, in recognition of her exceptional expertise, pioneering research and lifelong contributions to the advancement of science in Malaysia and internationally.

Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah, a renowned virologist, has successfully developed innovative vaccines and diagnostic kits, in addition to conducting molecular characterisation studies aimed at enhancing poultry health security and strengthening the livelihoods of livestock farmers both locally and abroad.

“I have served at UPM since 1983, and throughout that period, I have been actively involved in teaching, learning and research.

“This conferment is among the highest honours ever bestowed on me by the university,” she said.

Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah also highlighted the strong potential of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV)-based therapy for cancer treatment, noting that the virus has a natural ability to target cancer cells without harming healthy cells.

“NDV has a direct effect on human cancer cells and is capable of destroying tumour cells because it can specifically target the mechanisms involved in cancer cell growth and division.

“In addition, NDV stimulates the patient’s immune system to attack cancer cells, making it a promising approach in oncolytic therapy and immunotherapy,” she explained.

Meanwhile, her scientific stature is further underscored by her appointment as a Fellow of several prominent scientific bodies, including the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, the Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Malaysian Scientific Association and the International Science Council.
